Golf, Chesapeake Bay and on to Shenandoah

May 27

Today was a transition day.  It started early, as Evan and Steve had a 9:00 tee time at Potomac Shores, about an hour south of the city.  Evan’s company does quite a lot of business with Potomac Shores, and he and Steve were given the opportunity to play the course for free!  They loved it.

Their chauffeur drove back to DC, picked up Sara (who had spent the night at her house so she could pack for the weekend), and had a leisurely breakfast with the girls.  Laura had gotten up and enjoyed a run on the Mall earlier.  After breakfast, we packed and loaded all our belongings into the car.  Farewell, Capitol Hill!  We headed down the Potomac River toward the golf course.  As we had some time to kill before the boys would be finished with their round, we found Leesylvania State Park, an idyllic park on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay.  We drove through the park and walked along the water a bit before we were summoned to pick up Evan and Steve.  From the golf course, we began our drive to Shenandoah, but stopped for a great lunch at the Montclair Family Diner.  Mmmm, delicious chocolate pie and carrot cake for dessert!

The trip to the Shenandoah Valley took a couple hours.  The countryside is lush and green and full of fertile farmland.  We found the house we had rented, which, just as shown in the VRBO pictures, sat perched on a hillside overlooking the Blue Ridge Mountains.  Laura and Mom made a trip to the local Food Lion grocery store to replenish our supplies.  As our dining options in Stanley seemed somewhat limited, we bought provisions for a pasta dinner at home.  We had planned to watch the Cavaliers play the Raptors, but unfortunately, despite our attempts and the efforts of the homeowner, we couldn’t get the TV to work.  Ah, well, we made do with the jacuzzi and the stars instead.
